The opening chapter sees Gil suffering an accident after seeing his long lost wife standing below his window. Though Ingrid presumably drowned, the lack of a concrete answer plagues the family: could that woman disappearing around the corner be her? Could the phone ringing in the middle of the night be their mother finally wanting to return home? Here, the hope of Gil Coleman and his daughters, Nan and Flora, has haunted the family for twelve years, ever since Ingrid Coleman (Gil's wife and the girls' mother) disappeared and was never found. ![]() Swimming Lessons is a character-driven novel about a family, a love, a marriage, and how hope can be the worst thing sometimes. ![]() I can say confidently now that it's more the latter. I haven't read the author's previous work - Our Endless Numbered Days - and I couldn't decide from the synopsis whether I was going to get myself into another thriller spawned by the Gone Girl craze, or a quiet contemporary like, say, Everything I Never Told You. I didn't really know what to expect when going into Swimming Lessons. “It’s difficult to live with both hope and grief.” ![]() 5/12/2023 0 Comments When Tides Turn by Sarah Sundin![]() ![]() With precision and pizazz, fan favorite Sarah Sundin carries readers through the rough waters of love in a time when every action might have unforeseen world-changing consequences. Feeling intrigued? Just a quick warning: Angel-Seeker is not for the uninitiated. Sounds like an old SF chestnut? Well, Samaria has a rather interesting twist: a small portion of the population consists of gorgeous winged beings called angels, whose jobs are to fly into the stratosphere to sing prayers to a God named Jovah (who provides whatever help is needed, from medicines for a plague outbreak to intercessions for inclement weather). Her newest novel, Angel-Seeker, is the fifth book set in Samaria, a world populated with refugees from a destroyed Earth. Oh sure, there’s usually some nominal bit of intrigue to her plots and some of them feature interesting SF concepts (even if they’re not particularly well-fleshed out), but her stories are all about people falling in love. A romance novelist who sets her stories in different worlds from ours, and there’s not a whole lot of bumpin’ and grindin’ going on like there is in most mainstream romances, but all her novels thus far have centered around love stories. Sharon Shinn is typically classified as a science fiction/fantasy author, but really, she’s a romance novelist. ![]() 5/11/2023 0 Comments Colleen hoover merit![]() ![]() ![]() No one would be able to determine from the outside of our house that our family of seven includes an atheist, a home wrecker, an ex-wife suffering from a severe case of agoraphobia, and a teenage girl whose weird obsession borders on necrophilia. While Michael is equally as negligent as Leonie, Jojo is far more affected by his mother's absence than his father's. Jojo's feelings towards Leonie also reflect how he has been influenced by societal expectations of motherhood. Leonie's battle with drug addiction causes her to make brash and self-focused decisions, which often negatively impacts the people that surround her. She also struggles to support her family while her husband, Michael, is in prison. Leonie experiences intense grief over the loss of her brother, Given. Jojo's own mother, Leonie, is quite different from Mam. He looks to Mam, a supportive, loving, and healing confidante, as the archetypal mother figure. Throughout the story, Jojo has a clear expectation in his mind for what a mother should be. With a good dose of suspense and a dash of magic, The Ghost Tree is set to be a big hit, especially for fans of Practical Magic and The Wicked Deep. When Lauren starts to have visions of the two murdered girls, the countdown begins to the next killing, and the corruption that lays beneath the surface of the town threatens to break her world wide open. Lauren isn’t so sure that local police will catch the killer, especially since no one was charged with the murder of her own father just one year earlier. In sleepy Smiths Hollow, the bodies of two girls are found torn apart in someone’s backyard. Henry builds upon her early successes with twisted tales and takes it one step further in her latest novel, creating her own killer fairy tale with its own dark consequences. Stranger Things meets The Brothers Grimm, this nostalgia filled, small town murder mystery has just the right amount of eeriness to keep the reader on their toes. ![]() The Ghost Tree by Christina Henry is the ultimate ode to 1980’s paranormal horror. ![]() |
